It was shown by collecting material lither from sites of natural occurrence or from bazars that Afghan „Asa foetida” is derived not only from Ferula foetida (Bunge) Regel but also from further Ferula species. Final identification of these species is still open. The gum resin of Ferula narthex Boiss. is not identical with the „Asa foetida” drug because of lack of sulphur in its essential oil.
